Types of urine bags

Urine bags, also referred to as catheter bags or urine collection bags, are used to collect urine from a catheter. There are 2 kinds of urine bags: leg bag, also called a day bag and bedside bag, also called a night bag.v

  • Leg bag
  • Bed bag
  • One-day urine drainage bag
  • Multiple-day urine drainage bag

A leg bag is for daytime use. Its size (storage capacity) varies from 500 ml to 750 ml. The legbag is fixated to the tigh or calf with leg straps or a leg bag holder.

  • The leg bag can be switched to a bed bag.
  • Has a tube that varies in length from 4 cm to 60 cm.

A bed bag is for use at night or when you are bedridden. The volume (storage capacity) varies from 1.5 liters to 3 liters. The bed bag is fixated to the bed with a bed hanger or attached to a floor standard.

  • Has a tube with a maximum lenght of 130 cm.

A one-day urine bag can be used for at most 24 hours and is replaced daily. Here are two examples of how to use a one-day urine bag:

  • A one-day leg bag can be connected in the morning to a foley or condom catheter and replaced at night with a bed bag.
  • A one-day or multiple-day bed bag can be connected in the evening to a foley or condom catheter and then disconnected and thrown away the following morning.

A multiple-day urine bag is made from stronger material so it can be used for several days. It is only used with an indwelling catheter and not with a condom catheter. Here are two examples of how to use a multiple-day urine bag:

  • A multiple-day leg bag can remain attached for a week.
  • A multiple-day bed bag, in the home situation, is disconnected from the indwelling catheter in the morning, then rinsed, and reconnected to the indwelling catheter at night.
